An Auto Maintenance Checklist

Your car is a considerable investment, second only to your mortgage. Which makes sense, considering that your car is sort of like your home away from home. If you’re like most people, you probably spend hours in it week as it ferries you back and forth from your place of work to your home, takes you on errands and to friend’s houses, and carries your loved ones wherever they need to go. Naturally, your car is something you want to take care of.

A well-maintained car is more fuel-efficient, performs better, lasts longer, retains more value, and is simply safer than a vehicle that is not maintained. Here is a checklist for keeping your car in excellent condition. Continue reading

How to Care for Your Convertible’s Roof

bmw 2 series convertible drivingDriving a convertible car can be a lot of fun. When the sun is shining, there are few things more pleasurable than putting the roof down and going for a drive in glorious sunshine. Like any other part of your car, however, your convertible’s roof may not last as long as it could if you do not take appropriate care of it. Follow these simple tips from BMW of Freehold to ensure that you get the most from your convertible’s roof.

Learn about your car. It’s important that you know what your convertible’s top is made of. If it’s a hard top, then it’s probably not such an issue, but the materials used for soft tops can vary. A simple test is to drop a small amount of water on the roof. Fabric convertible tops absorb water. Water smears on vinyl. Understanding this can help you choose the right cleaning products.

Choose the right cleaning products. When it comes to cleaning your convertible top, you may need to invest in different products. The sort of thing you use on the rest of your car may not be suitable for the roof. It is always worth checking the owner’s manual for any specific instructions. Alternatively, talk to the service department at our dealership if you are unsure.

Clean properly and regularly. It is worth taking the time to clean your convertible top properly. Don’t hurry the job or you won’t get the best results. Avoid cleaning soft tops in direct sunlight and make sure that the top is not too hot when you want to wash it. Sunlight can damage the top when certain products are applied. Use cleaners according to the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure that the roof is properly dry before you let it down. This will prevent further damage from dampness.

Park your car safely. Your soft top may be vulnerable to certain things, particularly bird poop and the sap or deposits from trees. Avoid parking your convertible beneath trees or where there is no shelter from birds. If you do happen to get bird poop or other mess on the roof, ensure that you clean it off as soon as possible.  Bird poop and other deposits contain harmful chemicals that can permanently damage your car’s roof.

If this all sounds like a lot of effort, then consider paying somebody to clean and detail your convertible for you. For more information about caring for your convertible top, contact us at BMW of Freehold today.

2015 BMW i8 Receives Impressive Reviews

BMW’s new 2015 i8 has turned many heads as a result of its futuristic exterior, including the team at BMW of Freehold. But reviews of the hybrid sports car are pouring in and, by all accounts, there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.

In a review for the New York Daily News, Nick Kurczewski cited the car’s 228-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine tied to a 6-speed automatic with paddle-shifters, as well as the 29-horsepower electric motor with a 2-speed transmission used during electric-only driving. BMW Launches Partnership to Repurpose Retired Electric Car Batteries

Ever wonder what happens to electric car battery packs when they ultimately bite the dust? Energy grid management is quickly becoming an attractive option for car battery repurposing, and BMW is tossing its hat in the ring.

BMW has initiated a new partnership to ensure that used battery packs, which still have some usable storage capacity, see some use following their removal from electric vehicles.

BMW has partnered with German engineering group Bosch and Swedish utility company Vattenfall to reuse battery packs for grid energy storage. Even after its storage capacity diminishes too much for use in a vehicle, a battery pack still possesses enough capacity for other uses.

The project, known as Second Life Batteries, will launch an energy-storage system in Hamburg, Germany. This system will benefit the energy grid by ingesting extra energy during low-demand periods. This excess energy will then be released when demand increases.

The storage system will utilize battery packs from over 100 BMW vehicles. Bosch will design and manage the system, with Vattenfall handling its operation. All three partners anticipate the system being operational by the end of the year. At BMW of Freehold, we look forward to seeing what this impressive partnership achieves!
