The LAPD will use the vehicle for one year. In that year, the vehicle will undergo rigorous testing and will be featured at public events.

The compact size, agility, and tight turning circle make the i3 appealing for the LAPD as it can more than handle the busy streets and heavy traffic, and the emission-free driving is just icing on the cake. The large, conveniently located network of BMW i centers ensures the officers will always have a car in tip-top condition.

“By virtue of its innovative design and construction from leading-edge materials, the i3 is a brilliant fit with the technology-driven research philosophy of the LAPD,” said Christine Fletcher, Manager-BMW i for BMW of North America. “This will be a valuable learning experience for both BMW and the Department.”

The BMW i3 is made from mostly carbon fiber, but it still has the power and luxury synonymous with the BMW name. In line with the BMW i series, the i3 looks to solve many of the mobility challenges faced by densely populated cities by using recycled and renewable materials in a resource-efficient production.
